The Seoul High Court on Wednesday acquitted dissident Korean-German professor Song Du-yul of charges on engaging in anti-state activities as a member of the politburo of the North Korean Workers Party. Song was believed to have become a member of the KWP politburo in 1991 and attend the funeral for the late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung as a funeral commissioner raking 23rd in 1994.
The court said in its ruling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ��The results of reviewing all the evidence - statements made by former Workers�� Party secretariat Hwang Jang-yup; a report on North Korean written by Kim Kyeong-pil, a former official at the North Korean Consulate in Berlin who defected to the U.S. in 1999; and Song��s own books -- do not provide sufficient grounds to prove Song held membership in the North��s politburo.��
Accordingly, the court lowered its initial seven-year prison term to a three-year prison term with a five-year probation and released Song.
As for the charge on leading anti-state activities by writing books on North Korea and holding an academic conference on unification, the court also acquitted him saying, ��Those activities do not pose any apparent threat to national existence and security,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or basic free democratic order.�� About another charge on sympathizing with North Korea by attending the funeral for its leader Kim Il-sung and sending congratulation letters three times to Kim Jong-il,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the court found him innocent citing as its reason,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ��It was no more than a formality.��
The court, however, convicted Song of charges on meeting with Kim Il-sung five times by secretly visiting the North between May 1991 and March 1994,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], studying the Juche (Self-Reliance) ideology and supporting pro-North institutes. Also, Song was found guilty of the attempted fraud charge for filing a lawsuit against Hwang Jang-yup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who claimed that he joined the North Korean Workers�� Party and worked for the North under the assumed name of Kim Cheol-soo.
In convicting Song of those charges, the court said, ��Considering the North��s anti-South activities to provoke and cause social confusion and consequent instable national security in the South around the time of Song��s visit to the North,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Song��s activities deserve to be blamed as anti-state activities that seriously damaged national security,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],�� but added,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Song has not engaged in any pro-North activities since 1996 as he had a skeptical view on North Korea and voluntarily returned home, even though he knew that an arrest warrant for him was issued,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to admit that he had been involved in pro-North activities including participation in the North Korean Workers Party. He also vowed to work for the country��s peaceful unification within bounds of the law. Considering those facts, the court decided to suspend the execution of his sentence.��
Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Prosecutor Office clearly expressed its intention to file an appeal by saying, ��There have been many cases in which lower court��s decisions to acquit secret agents were reversed. Thus, we think that the higher court would make a wise decision.��

Despite speculation on newspapers' dwindling significance in the digital age of the Internet and satellite television,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more people are reading newspaper advertisements and turning to their favorite daily for information,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a recent survey revealed.
It found that while most readers turn to the printed press "to acquire information and knowledge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," "fun and entertainment" was the objective most commonly cited by TV viewers.

The Korea Broadcasting Advertising Corporation (KOBACO) announced Monday the results of a survey conducted on 6,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 men and women between the ages of 13 and 64 on consumer behavior for 2004. The survey was conducted over a two-week period beginning May 31.
